David Gentleman
In reference to National Distrust.
David Gentleman is a graphic designer, artist, illustrator and political activist.
He is known for his diverse working practice, masterfully using wood engraving, lithography and water colour in public murals, posters, books, postage stamps and even logos.
Gentleman designed and illustrated one of the most treasured books in my collection: ‘A Special Relationship’. It is about the U.S using British airbases to bomb other countries. In contrast to his more pastoral work, it is full of quick, rapid-fire visual commentary that is as darkly funny as it is deadly serious and shocking.
The image below shows one illustration from ‘A Special Relationship’. Apparently, the ‘Evening Standard’ reviewed the book under the headline of ‘No longer a gentleman’. I couldn’t disagree more.
