Eric Carle
The Very Hungry Caterpillar

In reference to The Apple and The Caterpillar.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a children's picture book designed, illustrated, and written by Eric Carle.

Since its first publication in 1969, the book has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into more than 60 languages. Carle was inspired to write the story after using a hole punch and being reminded of worm holes.

Quiet by Nature

Carle’s love of nature stemmed from his Saturday morning walks with his dad, whom his creature-filled books still honour to this day. Using layers of brightly painted paper, crayon and glue, his work at first appears to be busy and maybe even amateurish. However, his process was peaceful and thoughtful.

In honour of Carle, here are his paint-splashed shoes. He said, ‘Sitting down and starting a picture, it gets quieter and quieter, and then the world goes away’.
