Martin Kippenberger
METRO-Net
In reference to Zzz Books.
In the early 1990s, Martin Kippenberger developed the idea of a global underground network: METRO-Net. Kippenberger's METRO-Net was intended to counter life's predictable, rationally oriented parameters with a romantic sense of the world.
The stations were built using local materials and vernacular, making each one original to its location. As well as Syros (pictured below) and Dawson City, stations were proposed for Paris, Geneva, Rome, Tokyo, Hollywood, New York to name a few.
Sadly Kippenberger died too far too soon and the project was only party realised, but the idea goes on, round the world in many an imagination.
