William Golden
CBS Logo

In reference to Opus.

William Golden designed the CBS eye symbol in 1951. He was the in-house creative director of CBS’s Advertising and Sales Promotion Department. Apparently, the design was directly influenced by the ‘all-seeing eye’ hex symbols painted on the Shaker barns of Pennsylvania Dutch Country to ward off evil spirits.

Golden’s all-seeing eye represents a camera lens, and the pupil of the eye represents the viewing public.
