Hybrid
2018

Hybrid was a joint exhibition by Bloc Projects and Labrador, exhibiting the work of five artists represented by Labrador (makers of specially-commissioned objects for the home), and five artists represented by Bloc Projects (a contemporary arts organisation).

I designed a double-sided A3 poster (folding to A5 flyer) for the event. The front features the Labrador-Bloc hybrid logo I designed, along with the names of the ten artists. The reverse carries an informal conversation between Labrador and Bloc Projects.

A Flag (with Rules)

The flag of Labrador (the Canadian territory) has very specific rules regarding the representation of its symbolic black spruce twig.

According to the 1973 official design specifications, the diagonally aligned, stylised twig of black spruce has two growths from one stalk. Due to cold weather, the growth from earlier in the year, nearest the staff, is shorter than the growth from later in the year, when it is warmer. Each growth has three branches of approximately the same length.

Labrador Logo (a Game)

It’s from these official specifications that a logo could be derived for Labrador homewares: an abstracted black spruce twig with two growths from a stalk.

I designed the Labrador logo to work as a ‘game board’ or grid where pieces can be placed, arranged and played with. In this case, I used the existing Bloc Projects logo, stacking multiple logos together like coloured stones. Using the rules and grid, these pieces come together to make a single Labrador logo that is a hybrid of its parts. Four different configurations were made.

Further context for the design and the poster came from Inuit inuksuits and from the brightly coloured stone work of Ugo Rondinone.
